Going Shoeless

June 14, 2011 | Our Company

CDC Small Business Finance (CDC) was founded by Art Goodman with a clearly defined goal to support our local community through small business finance.  But we decided to extend our support beyond our borders for a day (as well as have a good excuse to make and shared exceptional food).  CDC recently participated in One Day Without Shoes. If you have never heard of One Day Without Shoes then you may not have heard of a company called Toms Shoes. Toms Shoes runs on the motto of One for One. For every pair of Toms Shoes you buy, they give a pair to a child without shoes. Every year Toms Shoes encourages the world to take the one day no shoe challenge. The purpose is to raise awareness of those that are less fortunate and that cannot afford to own a pair of shoes. In developing countries, walking is often the primary form of transportation and it often works better with shoes.

Most of us, in fact I don’t know anyone who doesn’t, own shoes. Some of you may not even think about putting them on most of the time. It is just a habit. Some of you may have hundreds of pairs and still want more. That is a great choice to be able to make. But for some humans on this earth shoes are not an option. It is make some out of whatever you can find or go without. According to Toms’ website, “It is said that if the world was a village of 100…40 of them wouldn’t have shoes!” And did you know that in Ethiopia alone, roughly one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil. Podoconiosis is 100% preventable by, yep you guessed it, wearing shoes!

So we decided we wanted to do our part to help raise awareness and held a One Day Without Shoes Shoeless Potluck. Everyone that participated brought in a dish to share and a pair of gently used shoes. Some people brought in quite a few pairs of shoes. April H. gets the gold star for her very generous donation of 33 shoes! But not close behind was Leah G. with 22 pairs! All together we collected 130 shoes that we donated to local charities in each of our office locations. It was a lot of fun and was for a great cause. You can bet we will raise the bar next year.
